Developing self-compassion and emotional balance

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) in Berkhamsted, Tring and Hertfordshire

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) is an evidence-based psychological approach that helps people who struggle with self-criticism, shame, or feelings of inadequacy to cultivate greater self-kindness, courage, and emotional wellbeing. Developed by Professor Paul Gilbert in the UK, CFT combines insights from evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, and mindfulness to help people understand how their minds work — and how to relate to themselves with greater warmth and care.

How CFT works

Our brains have evolved to respond powerfully to threat — an important survival mechanism, but one that can sometimes keep us caught in cycles of anxiety, shame, and self-blame, especially after trauma or difficult life experiences. CFT helps you understand these emotional systems and develop tools to soothe and balance them.

Through guided imagery, mindfulness, and compassion-based practices, CFT strengthens what’s known as the “soothing system” in the brain — helping you feel calmer, more grounded, and better able to manage life’s challenges. Over time, this approach can transform harsh self-judgment into understanding, and fear into a sense of safety and connection.

What CFT can help with

  • Anxiety and chronic stress
  • Depression and low mood
  • Trauma and post-traumatic stress
  • Low self-esteem and self-criticism
  • Shame, guilt, or feelings of failure
  • Relationship or attachment difficulties

Compassion as a path to healing

For many people who have faced trauma or emotional pain, being kind to oneself can feel unfamiliar — or even impossible. CFT recognises this and takes a gentle, non-judgemental approach, supporting you to gradually build self-compassion and emotional resilience. By learning to activate your compassionate mind, you can begin to experience greater calm, confidence, and balance in everyday life.
